Many of the garden decor options available at big-box stores fit the same design aesthetic – a lot of wrought iron, brick, painted wood and bright florals. An outdoor space for your home should really be an extension of your indoor living space, and if your indoor design tastes don’t match the limited items available at a big box store, you’ll have to get a little more creative with how you build your garden. Thankfully, many online tutorials exist to help you build a garden in a variety of aesthetics – and finding inexpensive items is easier than you might think with a bit of research and creativity.

Building a modern garden and outdoor space on a budget can be a fun project for you alone or your whole family. If you spend less on decor by reusing and repurposing objects you may already have, your space will be eco-friendly, and best of all, you’ll have some space in your budget to purchase supplies you might need for other elements of your garden, like fish pond supplies, unique plants and flowers, high-end furniture, or that grill you’ve been eyeing.  If you’re looking for some good ideas for your garden pond, check out Swallow Aquatics for some great fish pond elements.

Building a Modern Garden Pond

It’s a lot less expensive than you might think to build and maintain a garden pond and it adds a unique beauty to your outdoor space. The most important elements for constructing a garden pond are a pond liner, a pond filter and a pond pump. If you don’t mind a bit of maintenance and care, you can fill your pond with fish, such as koi fish, which do well in most outdoor environments. If you’d rather not invest the maintenance, hearty plants such as varieties of water lilies, water lotus, and bog plants, add natural, clean beauty. Many of these plants can survive the winter, and they help control the algae in your pond.

You’ll want to construct a border around the garden pond. Since you’re going for a modern aesthetic, choose simple, clean lines, such as bricks painted in a neutral color, or even cement cinder blocks in black, dark brown or dark grey. You can also surround your garden pond with thin, green bamboo shoots, which will require watering but will add a unique, natural look to your space.

Budget Modern  Outdoor Furniture

Since you’re going for simple, clean lines, it’s easy to construct some outdoor furniture to perfectly fit the alcoves and nooks of your outdoor space. Pallet furniture is hot right now, and it’s easy and inexpensive to construct. Sand the boards a bit and paint them if you want to stay away from an industrial look, or simply seal the wood if you want to retain its natural grain. You can also paint (or not paint) and stack cinder blocks on top of one another to create a foundation for a bench or table. Use some foam to make a seat cushion covered with waterproof fabric, and add some brightly colored pillows in solids to keep the modern aesthetic while adding pops of color.
